I LIKE BIG GARBAGE AND I CAN NOT DENY IT!

•March 6, 2012 • 5 Comments

Why throw it away…when it can be used for art, crafts, decorations, storage, or so on???

Audrey, a French-but-living-in-Honduras house guest, asked me why did I pull over to pick up garbage? I had just put a pallet that was out for trash in front of a house into the back of our still new car.  I laughed and said, “Do you know what I can make with that?!”

So here are some of the things we did not throw away!

Back in December, my husband and I had bought potatoes; sweet ones, Yukon gold ones and even purple ones!  Not sure why we bought so many as we do not eat potatoes that much, our dinners are usually carb free!

Mix potatoes and sitting around doing nothing, and you get yourself an unwanted garden.

Most people would throw these potatoes away, but…

I embraced it, especially after reading on Pinterest that someone was having a problem growing potatoes from a potato in water!

Good Gracias Golden Pototoes…We Had No Problems!

Below is just from putting one sweet potato in a large jar at the end of January!

From Plants, Springs & Toilet Paper Rolls!

I mentioned the large jar above because the below was put in a smaller jar at the same time and is not so big and crazy, but growing none the less!

From Plants, Springs & Toilet Paper Rolls!

Our Yukon Gold and Purple Tots are slower to grow too!

From Plants, Springs & Toilet Paper Rolls!

Here is how I did it!

1) Waste a bunch of good eating potatoes by not eating them and letting them sit around for 2 months or so (not in fridge).

2) When they do have some sprouts…stick tooth picks in them so they do not hit the bottom of the container.  Bigger jars/containers will give better results!

From Plants, Springs & Toilet Paper Rolls!

3) Keep the water high, as the roots grow up.

From Plants, Springs & Toilet Paper Rolls!

From Plants, Springs & Toilet Paper Rolls!

From Plants, Springs & Toilet Paper Rolls!

From Plants, Springs & Toilet Paper Rolls!

VOILA!  A quite contrary garden grows!

And then, some gardens grow in odd spots!

From Plants, Springs & Toilet Paper Rolls!

Yes, those are tiny air plants growing inside a very old rusty bed spring.

Bed Springs which would normally rest out their long final days on an icky old landfill. But I bought this little threesome at an Antique fair for a whopping $1.00!  I save garbage from the garbage!

I must not take credit for the mix, I think Jim suggested it.

I was going to use the bed springs as a candle holder, but it is a match made in air plant and rust heaven!

From Plants, Springs & Toilet Paper Rolls!

And now the latest of my “Saving-of-the-Garbage” creations!

TaaaDaaaaa!!!

From Plants, Springs & Toilet Paper Rolls!

Around 40 old toilet paper rolls were saved to be yet used again!

Who knew I would have garbage on my wall!?

Here is how I did this:

1) Cut up the toilet paper rolls into 5 sections. They do not have to be perfectly the same size or even cut in straight lines.

From Plants, Springs & Toilet Paper Rolls!

2) Connect the pieces together in any design you want! I used hot glue, but I have seen Elmers glue used (but you will need clothes pins or paper clips to hold the sections together while the glue dries) and some stapled the sections together. My design was copied, but modified, from the one I saw on pinterest.com

AFTER A LONG DELAY AND A COUPLE OF FIRSTS…

WE FINALLY EXPERIENCED THE EAR RATTLING ROAR OF THE DAYTONA 500!

— For those that are not in the know…

The Race was postponed due to rain.

It was moved to 12 noon the next day, but yet still, that did not happen.

7pm , 30 hours late the race finally was a go.

Not only was that a first,

But running the race at night was a first.

And to top it all…it was Jim’s first Nascar race ever too.

Wait, I am not finished…there are more firsts to come!

Before we go there, here are some photos of our experience!

Remember to get to the FULL photo album click on the photos.

AND THIS IS HOW OUR DAY AT THE RACES ENDED…

HUDDLED UNDER THE BLEACHERS TRYING NOT TO GET WET!

BUT LO AND BEHOLD…30 HOURS LATER THE RACE ACTUALLY HAPPENED!

AND HERE ARE OUR PHOTOS & VIDEOS (Jim actually took  most of these):

I LOVED WATCHING THE PITS…THE CREWS ARE CRAZY FAST!

From The Actual RACE – 36 Hours Late

LOVED WHEN THE CARS CAME AROUND THIS TURN…WAITING FOR THE ROAR TO PASS US!

From The Actual RACE – 36 Hours Late

AND WHEN MONTOYA WAS GETTING READY TO GO AROUND THE TURN IN THE ABOVE PHOTO, HE LOST CONTROL OF HIS TARGET SPONSORED CAR, WHILE SLIDING SIDEWAYS DOWN THE TRACK HE RAMMED INTO ONE OF THE CLEANING TRUCKS.

These trucks clean the track after any kind of crash or mishap and they are equipped with a jet engine for drying or blowing off debris which means they also have jet fuel on board.

MONTOYA’-S CAR IMMEDIATELY BLOWS UP, BUT HE GETS OUT SAFELY.  THEN THE CLEANING TRUCK BLEW, AND BLEW BIG!  THE DRIVER IN THE TRUCK WALKED AWAY OKAY TOO.

BY THE WAY THAT WAS THE LAST OF THE FIRSTS…

THIS TYPE OF CRASH WAS THE FIRST FOR ANY NASCAR RACE, MUCH LESS THE DAYTONA 500.

IT WAS 10:30PM AND WE HAD A 2.5 HOUR DRIVE IN FRONT OF US.

JIM, THE ENVIRONMENTAL CLEANING ENGINEER GUY, KNEW HOW LONG IT WOULD TAKE TO CLEAN THE TRACK AFTER THE FIRE WAS OUT AND DONE.

AND WE WERE DONE TOO.

Sad to go, but so excited about what we did experience!

GHOSTLY PHOTOS…REAL OR NOT?

•February 21, 2012 • Leave a Comment

Went on a ghost tour with The Hendersons (parental peeps from the “Hender” part of HenderBalz) and of course, I took photos!

Oh heavenly Orbs, are you a Spirit OR just dust or bugs?

Feel to read a past post on the subject of ghost and see why we are believers!  Click on the below link to read!

Our Own “Casper the Ghost!”

The ancient Spanish Soldier Spirits in St. Augustine on this particular night were active if you DO believe!!!

I will explain the photso first and you tell me…are they real???

This first set is interesting and I think my favorite!

The guide told us that the man that was murdered by thugs in this alley way back in the day now haunts it by making making sure people get through safely.

From St. Augustine Ghostly Orbs!
From St. Augustine Ghostly Orbs!

The first two…no orbs!

But lo and behold, the final photo is just when the guide was telling us that one time whilst she walked alone she felt something brush along her hand and she thinks it was the ghost  attempting to keep her safe…and bam…an orb right in the middle of the photo!

From St. Augustine Ghostly Orbs!

The next set are just random shots…no Orbs!

From St. Augustine Ghostly Orbs!

But just when the guid said her EMF (Electro-Magnetic Field thingy) was beeping…bam…an Orb showed up way high above her!

From St. Augustine Ghostly Orbs!

That is not the moon above us…but an Orb!

From St. Augustine Ghostly Orbs!

My Favorite…the Bright Orb between father and son near their hands…maybe even holding their hands!???!

From St. Augustine Ghostly Orbs!

The one below is interesting…No Orbs!

Second Photo…Orbs!

This is a story of a woman who had an “Inn” during prohibition and she use to wave her lamp on that balcony (at the time called “Widows Walk”) to her boyfriend who was across the waterway to let him know if it was safe or not to bring the liquor over!

Uh, time to bring the illegal whiskey!!!

From Drop Box

THOSE ARE THE BEST!

Sooooo…what do YOU think???

And now just a few other photos I took on the walk!

Back in the day people were buried everywhere, so the names of these bricks just may be perfect!

From St. Augustine Ghostly Orbs!

Creepy Cemetary at night…always a good spot for a ghost story or two!

Hope you enjoy our Halloween in February Post!

A NEW TWIST ON THE OLD!

•February 2, 2012 • 4 Comments

MY NEW FAVORITE THING TO DO!

When I saw how to transpose a photo to wood I was hooked…no more just framing photos for me!

The possibilities took off from there…like transposing photos onto glass!

From CraftBlog2

Supplies needed for both wood and glass:

Photo to Transpose, Wood or Glass Surface, Gel Medium, Water, Mod Podge

From CraftBlog2

From CraftBlog2

I saved the below leaded glass kitchen cabinet door from a kitchen remodel in an old house we used to own. I knew one day I would do something cool with it and I think the time has come.

Since I love to do photography, my first idea was to just put photos in the squares, until I learned about this transposing photos business!

From CraftBlog2

I was staring at the leaded glass door and it came to me…can I do that to glass too? And as you can see by my first photo…you can!

And here is how to do it yourself!

1) Get surface!

This particular post is for wood or glass surfaces. But check out this link for other surfaces:  Image Transfer Methods

2) Pick Photos / Images!

This was not an easy task for me, but I managed to get down the pile to 16 for the 12 spots!

From CraftBlog2

3)  Size the photos!

My not so square sections in the leaded glass cabinet door were not typical, so I was forced to finally use Photo Shop to size and print them out. I have been wanting to learn the program my husband so lovingly gave to me a year ago, so although I went through a frustrating period, I am glad I learned how to do at least one thing on it!

From CraftBlog2

4)  Print the photos!

The images need to be on regular printer/copier paper. The tutorial I saw did not tell me, so i tried it with a real photo first ending in a non-craft craft. Either coping the photos or laser printing them out will do. Although I have done the above photo with an ink jet, so that works too. For my final product I will either copy or laser print them out as I hear the color is more brilliant after the transposing is done.

5)  Spread Gel Medium evenly onto surface!

Lay image face down onto surface making sure there are no bubbles.  Let dry over night.

From CraftBlog2

6) Wet the surface!

When surface is completely dry, wet the surface with water. Better to use a paper towel or just your fingers to do so…I do not recommend the mess you may make by pouring as it looks like in the below photo!

From CraftBlog2

7) Remove the paper!

Once fully wet, start to rub the paper with your finger tips. I would do so gingerly as you may rub the image off as well. With that said, it is a bit harder with. I use rubber tipped gloves as your fingertips can get sore if the surface is large! Also, with wood the transposed photo is on the front of your wood and you need to remove all the paper for it to look its best. With glass, the transposed side will most likely be on the back, so I did not take all of the paper off in areas I wanted it to be darker.

From CraftBlog2

8)  Finish the surface!

To seal or put a finished look on the surface, spread Mod Podge over the surface where the image was transfered and let dry.

SHELLS, CONES, STRING…OH MY!

•February 1, 2012 • Leave a Comment

LET THE CRAFTS BEGIN!

I will start with a Christmas craft that missed Christmas!

My Shell Christmas Tree…Turned….Shell Everyday Decoration!

From 2012 Projects

My first plan was to make two shell Christmas trees…but with the glue I was using it was taking too long.

That was until I got my hands on my packed away glue gun!

By the way, I used hard cardboard cones as they were way cheaper than Styrofoam, but anything would work!

From 2012 Projects

With 75% left to go, I got in glue gun mode and finished it in less than an hour!

For extra cuteness…I used clear fingernail polish with sparkle (don’t forget the sparkle) on it for some extra shine!

From 2012 Projects

NOTE:  I had leftover shells with holes in them from my Christmas Tree Shell Garland project, so I just used them.  It may look a bit better with no-hole shells.  Also, after realizing that perfectly fitting them in was not my thing, I just started layering them willy nilly to hide the cone form, and I liked how it looked at the end.

Since I was running out of shells (okay I could never run out of them since I now live across the street from the beach), I decided to go a different route….the string route…for the other cone.  Colorful yarn can be used for this as well.

From 2012 Projects

The picture says it all…Elmers glue and two kinds of string!  Around and around you go…and you got yourself a cone covered in string!

I have seen this done with large letters, bottles…almost anything and it always looks great!

PS…look in the first photo.  Check out the block of wood with the rockers on it.   Are you now wondering, “How did she do that?”  Well, come back soon and learn for yourself!

PSS…We are off on more adventures this weekend…so more travel stories and photos to come as well!
