FAREWELL MY FRIEND

•October 25, 2011 • 2 Comments

Vermont you have been a great friend to us and we thank you.  Farewell our friend.

And I am thinking, there is no better way to say good-bye through the so many awesome Quotes, Comments and Proverbs about Vermont and all of New England.

The best…as in fuuny…are about the weather:

“It won’t be warm till the snow gets off the mountain, and the snow won’t get off the mountain till it gets warm.”

From The Drive to Quebec, Canada

“We have two seasons: winter and the Fourth of July.”

From Go Fourth July

“In New England we have nine months of winter and three months of darned poor sledding.”

From Winter 2011

“Take off your flannels before the first of May, and you’ll have a doctor’s bill to pay.”

From Our 1st Snow Weekend in Brattleboro

“Thick and blue, tried and true. Thin or crispy, way too risky.” (proverb about the safety of ice)

From Snowmobing 2011

There’s an expression in New England: “If you don’t like the weather, wait ten minutes.”

From Our Brat. Back Yard

An old Yankee joke:
To the European, a Yankee is an American.
To an American, a Yankee is a New Englander.
To a New Englander, a Yankee is a Vermonter.
To a Vermonter, a Yankee is someone who eats apple pie for breakfast.
And to a Vermonter who eats apple pie for breakfast
A Yankee is someone who eats it with a knife.

From Farmer’s Marketing Opening/May Day – Brattleboro

New England Proverbs by New Englanders

“You can’t keep trouble from coming, but you don’t have to give it a chair to sit on.”

“Small circumstances produce great events”

“Wishing isn’t doing.”

From Farmer’s Marketing Opening/May Day – Brattleboro

“You can’t always tell by the looks of a toad how far he can jump.”

“Talk less and say more”

“The world is your cow.  But you have to do the milking.”

From Strolling of the Hieffers 2010

“He who feels the benefit should feel the burden.”

“One today is worth two tomorrows.”

“A good word now is worth ten on a headstone.”

From Concord, Mass

“The hardest work is to do nothing.”

“Take care of the minutes and the hours will take care of themselves.”

“A deaf husband and a blind wife are always a happy couple.”

From Trip to Greenfield & Deerfield, MA

“The quickest way to do many things is to do one thing at a time.”

“Cut your sail according to your cloth.”

From Cape Cod & Rhode Island!

General Quotes by Famous New Englanders:

Oh, New England, especially Brattleboro, you have been wonderful to us with your unending beautiful views, freakin’ cute villages, varying shades of old red barns, oh so nice people, explosion of leaf color in the Fall, yum-o-licious seafood, rolling green hills, great old homes, adorable farm animals, amazing art culture, and over the top community spirit!

MAKING THE BEST OF EVERYTHING

•October 7, 2011 • Leave a Comment

“The Happiest People Do Not Have the Best of Everything, They Just Make the Best of Everything.”

Facebook is good for a lot of things, but it is best for some of the messages that pass over its pages every minute of every day of every week and year.

The above was one of them.

The quote reminded me of my, as I lovingly refer to her as, Mommasan.

I think she was the Queen of Making the Best of Everything during my Childhood.

She is not perfect, but she has made the best of her imperfection.

And to me, my friend, that, is pure perfection.

Here is to My Mom and Making the Best of Anything, Everything and All.

From Mom Photos

And now a bit our “Making the Best of EveryThing”.  Or at least, we made the best of the situation at hand.

Come on, we all have them.  Think and remember…and maybe, just maybe, we will all start to…

MAKE THE BEST OF EVERYTHING!

I am in a quote mode too…so just a few on the subject for your viewing pleasure.

When we finally made it to Alegria, El Salvador, a tiny town on top of a mountain we were told there were no more hotel rooms. The town drunk stumbled upon us and instead of ignoring him when he greeted us, we told him of our situation and in the end he found us a room, a great room in deed, and one with a view.

Our Bus from a small town in El Salvador, Perquin, to a small town in Honduras, Marcala, did not show up.  But we did not give up, neither did a bunch of other people.  We pooled our money together and then talked a local guy with a pick-up truck into driving us! And even when it rained, sopped to the bone, we laughed and laughed.  Best transport ever!

Oh, the day of all days.  Being left at sea for 45 minutes after a scuba dive, once on a boat we were happy.  But little did we know, we still faced the most harrowing experience ever.   And then after surviving that, we kissed the sand beneath our feet.  Throughout the whole ordeal, we asked fate if that was all it had and laughed in the face of the circumstance.  Take that wind, rain, 7 foot waves and anxiety-ridden sea captains!  Ha Ha Ha!

HAPPY HAPPY HAPPY!

I love this man…and he makes me happy!

What is happiness?

I like this quote on happiness by Clinical Psychologist Dr. Ellen Kenner:

“Happiness is a long-lasting enduring enjoyment of life, it is being in love with living.”

I feel being “in love with living” is seeing the beauty and wonderment that is all around us at any given time.  That is MY being “in love with life.”   Part of being” in love with living” to me is accepting that everyone has a different “love with life.”

Happiness is the easiest emotion to feel, the most difficult to define, and the hardest to create intentionally. ~Norman Cousins

People put their definitions of happiness on other people all the time.  Living up to other people’s expectation or desires will never be YOUR or THEIR happiness.

If happiness is standing on street corner saying “Happy happy happy.” all day long, then so be it.

…in New England that  is!

Okay…we have seen ALOT of New England and a couple of weekends ago we put the final touches on our exploring adventures here in the Great North East.

We went to Cape Cod and New Bedford, Massachusetts, and then to Newport and Providence, Rhode Island.

Places steeped in history and spotted with wonderful coast line beaches and ports.

And here is what we saw!

Countless freakin’ cute villages with red barns, steeples, covered bridges, and veggie stands. Hundreds of islands off the well fished coasts with lobster buoys bobbing away in the blue ocean water. Mountains and valleys covered in overflowing amounts of green in the summer, red, yellow and gold in the fall, and white in the winter. Squirrels, birds, beavers, skunks, deer and even moose sprinkle the countryside dodging in and out of trees, yards and roads.

This is the land called New England and it is our home…for now.

OUR MOST VIEWED VIDEOS…

•September 8, 2011 • Leave a Comment

On YouTube that is!

Not sure why some of these are up there in views…but here are our top 15 viewed videos on our HenderBalz-Vision Channel on youtube.com

Enjoy and please excuse our amateur filming and editing abilities! Most all clips are under 30 seconds, but some are around 1 minute or as long as 4 minutes (only one is that long though).

1) The below clip is of Vendors on a “local” bus in El Salvador. They come on at stops and walk through, this particular stop had a abnormal large amount of sales people!   24,205 VIEWS!

2) This clip is of me, Aunt Dawn, and Turner, our (at the time) 16 year old nephew, arm wrestling. It is has been a tradition through Turner’s life that the two of us arm wrestle…this was the first time the “Grasshopper” won!   4,448 VIEWS!

3) This clip was taken by our nephew, the above Arm Wrestling Winner, Turner ,when he came to visit us in Honduras.  No description is needed…enjoy the beauty!   2,437 VIEWS!

4) We went to a funky little zoo in the tiny town of El Valle, Panama. In this zoo there were roosters, and here is what we thought was the saddest crow on on the smallest rooster.   2,231 VIEWS!

5) We love the squirrel and when this red one popped up on the beaches of Montezuma, Costa Rica we had to video it’s odd eating habits!   1,767 VIEWS!

6)  Not sure why this one is viewed so much, but Folsom Prison on the island of Guanaja off the coast of Honduras is kind of funny!  1,157 VIEWS!

7) This video shows how Hondurans use their hands and body to communicate, with special footage of Jaime (Jim) doing his Catracho thing!   1,041 VIEWS!

8)  This is one our favorite because it just makes us smile! We call it the “Panties Get Wet” video! We were on a small island off, Bastimentos, of Boca del Toro, Panama for the first annual Water Taxi Races! It was a very festive day!   1,014 VIEWS!

9)  We took a tour of a cigar factory in Estili, Nicaragua and this is the final video we took of the rolling and cutting process.   994 VIEWS!

10)  Ah, the town of Alegria, El Salvador. It is worthy of it’s own song. On this particular morning we ran into the morning show, Viva La Manana! being taped live in the central park. We saw this guy and his son the day before playing from table to table to make money, the next day they are on a National TV show!   970 VIEWS!

11)  Bonaca is a tiny island off the small island of Guanaja that is off the coast of Honduras. This is the view from our hotel on Bonaca.   951 VIEWS!

12)  Kings Day (Jan. 6) in Livingston, Guatemala! This is a traditional dance the Garifuna people do during festivals. Check out that fancy footwork!   899 VIEWS!

13)  This is a style of dance and music that comes from the Garifuna people. You basically just slightly  lift  your feet up kind of walking in place and then shake your butt like you have never done before!   685 VIEWS!

14)  The celebration at Expatriados in La Ceiba, Honduras after Honduras beat El Salvador and USA tied with Costa Rica qualifying Honduras for the World Cup 2010!   674 VIEWS!

HURRICANE IRENE VERMONT STYLE

•August 29, 2011 • 6 Comments

This has not been the SUMMER OF LOVE for Brattleboro.

First the Brooks House on Main Street, which is on the Register of Historic Places, burnt down.  Closing down 50 apartments and around 10 businesses.

Then a co-worker shoots his Manager at the Co-Op a month ago.

And now this, the  flooding of what are normally cute quaint creeks.

Although, Brattleboro itself did not get major downpours or wind, Tropical Storm Irene hovered over the Green Mountains dropping down 4-7 inches of rain.  Brattleboro is in a valley below the Green Mountains and Whetstone creek brought those 4-7 inches of water to town Sunday.

Brattleboro is not the only town in Vermont where a usually mild-mannered creek turned ugly on Sunday, but we live here and it is our home.  Here is what I saw around town today after the water receded.

Mud, proof the creek was there, where it was not supposed to be.

The flooding from Tropical Storm Irene has closed down around 250 roads, damaged or completely destroyed many of the beloved old covered bridges, and even caused the death of one person in Vermont.

This post is in honor of all the lives lost and damage done from Irene, up and down the East Coast.

THE ELUSIVE NEW ENGLAND MOOSE!

•August 18, 2011 • 1 Comment

We have lived in New England for 16 months now and we have traversed the highways, bi-ways, and back country roads through this land constantly seeing “Moose Crossing” signs and to no avail seeing no actual moose!

So we set out to hopefully see some moose…and this was our journey:

– Finding two stretches of roads famed for their moose sightings.

From The Elusive Moose Hunt!

We only wish we saw that moose!

– Getting to “no where” (Whitefield), but beautiful, north New Hampshire.

From The Elusive Moose Hunt!

– Being forced to stay at an old wonderful resort in said “no where.”

From The Elusive Moose Hunt!

– Driving up to over 6000 feet altitude (top of Mt. Washington) in first gear on an old winding steep road.

From The Elusive Moose Hunt!
From The Elusive Moose Hunt!

– Waiting at the border for Canada to let us in (apparently Canadians do not let us Americans in until 8:00am).

From The Elusive Moose Hunt!

– Traveling into another country and going 4 hours out of our way.

From The Elusive Moose Hunt!

– Having to fill our bellies on wonderful Canadian French bread, cheeses, pate, and pastries.

My favorite….

– Being forced by the long hand of the Homeland Security Law to stay put for our longest immigration process ever…especially for our shortest visit to a foreign country (approximately 2 hours).

I was not able to take photos of this event…but felt “stung” for having our car rummaged through!

– Stopping for personal breaks (two of those just happened to be antique stores with bathrooms)!

– Then finally hitting the second of the two “Moose Allies” on our way to Bar Harbor, Maine.

Another antique stop got us this moose sighting!

And for all that…this is ALL what we got…in the live moose department:

But we got to see this too…

And you know we love the GNOME!

Although we only got to see one female moose…we believe, even more now, that New England is freakin’ beautiful!
