25 RANDOM THINGS ABOUT LIVING IN VERMONT

•September 9, 2010 • Leave a Comment

In honor of our 35 Random Things About Living in Honduras Blog Post in February 2009, we now made a list about things we discovered, think is funny, or are in awe of so far during our time in Vermont!

1. Even though it is cold more during the year than warm, there is a large percentage of motorcycles, pools, boats, and convertible cars here.

2. Red barns are everywhere!

From Trip to Greenfield & Deerfield, MA

3. They take green, as in environmental consciousness, to a new level. I have never seen so many options for grass fed, hormone free, petted daily, pesticide free, talked-to-nicely choices of meat in all my life. And I have never see so many people of all ages and backgrounds using their own bags at all grocery stores!

4. And speaking of green, I have never paid more for said “good for you” meat and organic veggies in all my life!

From Sunday Drive in the Country

5. There is more cooked and prepared food at the farmer’s market than fresh from the farm vegetables.

From Farmer’s Marketing Opening/May Day – Brattleboro

6. Vermont does not seem to have the pick of quality apples, as they have not been good as we would like.

7. You can not throw a rock in Brattleboro without hitting an artist/creative of any kind.

From First Friday in Brattleboro

8. Jim has started to “tuck-in” his shirts because his co-workers say the other option is messy.

9. Vermont produces some really great micro brews.

From Brat. Brewers Fest Weekend!

10. There seems to be a high amount of homemade ice cream companies here.

From Trip Home from Montreal

11. And while on the ice cream subject, the phrase “hard” ice cream is used here.

12. It is an undisputed beautiful place.

From Roadtrip to Middlebury and Woodstock, VT

13. Odd wind storms stir up now and then which still amazes Jim, almost as much as lightening and thunder storms do.

14. Vermonters do not believe in privacy fences. Fences to keep in horses, cows, goats, sheep, donkeys…yes…but not for privacy!

From 2010_08_30

15. There are basically two kinds of people in Vermont: 1) Hard working born in Vermonters, and 2) those with money, and I mean trust fund kind of money, from other New England or North East locations. Okay, there are the odd stragglers like Jim and I around as well.

16. It is super dooper green, as in color, here. Although, I hear that before I know it, it will be super dooper white.

From Saturday Drive to NH!

17. The best goat cheese on earth is made in Vermont. Put that in your chevre pipe and smoke it French goat herders!

From Memorial Day Weekend 2010

18. A woman here would most likely be more excited by a functional pair of rain boats or Uggs than a great pair of heels.

19. There are a lot of Dawns here.

From Strolling of the Hieffers 2010

20. One never gets bored of covered bridges.

From Covered Bridges of Vermont

21. We think that there is some kind of unwritten Vermont rule that you must own a Subaru.

22. We look forward excitedly for the Fall Leaf Peeping Season!

23. Cows are freakin’ cute.

From Memorial Day Weekend 2010

24. Even if there is nightlife, it is very mellow and over early.

From Brat. Brewers Fest Weekend!

25. There are definitely ghosts in Vermont.

26. Vermont has the best flowers ever!

From Our Brat. Back Yard
From Roadtrip to Middlebury and Woodstock, VT

AND

27. Everyone drives slow here and now we are too! There is nothing to hurry for in Vermont!

MY NAME IS DAWN AND I AM A HURRICANE MAGNET.

•September 9, 2010 • Leave a Comment

Hurricanes have been hitting down either before, during or after my visits since 2002!

I am sorry to Mexico, Virginia, New Orleans, all the Gulf area, and now Canada!

2002 – Hurricane Isidore hits Mexico the evening after we left!
2003 – Hurricane Isabel hits while I am visiting Virginia Beach, VA!
2005 – Hurricane Katrina hits a month before Jim and I were supposed to go for a vacation in New Orleans, LA.
2008 – Hurricanes Gustav and Ike both hit the Gulf area on our cross country road trip, so we had to change our plans to visit New Orleans, again!
2010 – Hurricane Earl was close to hitting Va Beach, VA, which I just visited less than 2 weeks ago. Then it was headed for New England where I live, and as we went up to Montreal for the weekend, the Hurricane hit Canada!

I am just so happy a hurricane did not hit Honduras when we were there, the 7.1 earthquake, flooding, bug infestation, and almost dying at sea on a small boat was enough!

Maybe I should move out of Hurricane Country and not visit those areas during Hurricane season anymore.

Now off to Blizzard weather here up in the frigid North East…let’s see what I can whip up!

“JUST ANOTHER CUTE LITTLE TOWN.”

•August 30, 2010 • Leave a Comment

Jim said that one day when I asked, “Should we take the big camera?” as we were heading out to a town 45 minutes away. Yes, we have been to lots of cute little towns here in New England! I took the camera, by the way and go to the bottom for that particular cute little town.

After my mutli-post July, I took it easy in the blogging department in August, but not in the photo taking department! Enjoy the small towns we went to and so much more! AND REMEMBER TO CLICK ON THE PHOTOS IF YOU WANT TO SEE THE WHOLE ALBUM!

First, we went to pick up our computer from the doctors and stopped by a Shakers Village.

WEEK 4 OF DAWN’S DO-A-NEW-THING MONTH

•July 29, 2010 • Leave a Comment

Woo Hoooo! Week 4…the end of this new-things shenanigans!

**Remember! Click on the photos to get to the whole album!**
(Photos with no words on the lower right corner are not ours.)

July 22nd:  Although a different kind of new thing, it is a monumental one for me!  I got my doctor to give me a prescription for a sinus infection without her even looking up my nose.

After my $1000.00 / 5 doctor appointment fiasco in Brooklyn this past winter, I was very worried about not getting the antibiotics I need and fast, but this nurse practitioner was a blow over!!  I wish I could have gotten her to do it over the phone, but unfortunately I did have to go into the office.

And I applied for volunteer work today. Volunteer work is not something new to me, but since I need to make this place home-for-now, I also need to make a life-for-now too.

I will be working with Big Brothers / Big Sisters, but not as a mentor since they have a 2 year commitment.  As I know, non-profits need a lot of help, so I will be writing newsletter articles, marketing for in-kind donations, helping with events, and stuffing envelopes if the need be.

July 23rd:  Went to Nashua, NH and Burlington, MA for the very first time.

Not that I think Nashua or Burlington are all that, but they do have something we needed…a Costco and a Best Buy!  Jim always buys his tires at Costco, so we found one in New Hampshire, a state that does not have sales tax!  And we needed to put our sick computer in for some Geek Squad warranty fixins’!

A little extra in the new thing department:  our hotel lost power minutes after we got there!  Fortunately 3.5 hours later, a dinner out and walk around a huge mall, it came back on!

July 24th:  We encountered a Revolutionary War Re-enactment!

From Concord, Mass

We were in the Minute Man National Park which is in Concord, MA.  A little show took place around a building that once was a tavern, no beers now, but once beers sloshed freely in pewter mugs!  We got the full view of a small regiment; the authetic clothing, marching (by the way they marched I am surprised they got anywhere back in the day), and guns.  They even fiired the guns!

From Concord, Mass

Ooooh!  And we participated in a market place setting as well…eels, material, hats, and veggies for sale!

From Concord, Mass

There were lots of new things learned on this day around and about Concord, MA! We saw 4 literary greats grave sites in the Sleepy Hallow Cemetery.   We also saw where Paul Revere was captured as well as where one of the first battles of the Revolutionary war took place!

From Concord, Mass

July 25th:  Went to Boston, MA for the first time ever!

From North End, Boston!

We were not planning on going to Boston on this particular weekend, but we were so close we had to take a peek see.  We went to the Italian hood of North End where the Italian food was plenty and the parking was rare!   I had never seen worse parking in all my city living life!  Most of the street parking was reserved for residents!  Why put in hundreds of restaurants, more seats than residents in the hood, and have NO parking?  But the joyous atmosphere, the crowded streets, the St. Joseph Fest, the outdoor concert, and the Italian rice ball and homemade canoli made it all worth while!

From North End, Boston!

July 26th:  My first day back to the gym.   Not new…but trying to get back on track!

After a month of not being able to go, it was nice to try it out, but to be honest  my back hurt afterwards.  Argh!  (Note: went back in two days and all seems to be going well.)

July 27th:  Today I learned a few new things…learned from reading a murder mystery (and checked online ;o)!  They are not just for guilty pleasures anymore!

1)  Edgar Allan Poe used to live in The Bronx, when it was farmland.

2)  Allan is not Poe’s middle name, but the last name of the surrogate father that raised him after his parents died.

All this after I just learned about the lives of Thoreau, Hawthorne, Alcotts and Emerson this past weekend in Massechusettes. What a literary week I am having!

3)  The New York Botanical Garden located in The Bronx has an original growth forest…yes…a forest in New York City!

4)  There is a great conservatory in the NY Botanical Garden that was built in 1902, 22 years younger than the great Conservatory of Flowers in the Golden Gate Park in SF, CA, but grand none the less!

I have some family roots in The Bronx…I do need to visit soon!

July 28th: Went on a hike/walk in Bellow Falls (the location of my acting debut) along the river/railroad tracks.

We have not really taken advantage of the hiking opportunities in Vermont much, so on this fine weathered eve (low humidity and not too hot) we jumped at the chance for exploration. Let’s just say this is our practice for a try at least part of the Long Trail! Yes, we just want to be able to say we hiked part of the Appalachian Trail!</a>

JULY 29TH: Hmmm…I sewed a button on a pair of pants for Jim.

Now, that is something new for me!

JULY 30TH: I thought before I talked.

That is just amazing for me!

JULY 31ST And now my last…I did not get the tattoo I thought I was going to get by the end of the month.

Something that will be on my body for the rest of my life needs even more time to think through…even after thinking about it for say…20 years! But I have decided on the basic idea for the design!

THERE YOU HAVE IT! I AM DONE WITH THE NEW-THINGS!

Remind me never to do that again!

BUT I WILL BE SURE TO KEEP ON TAKING FUNNY PHOTOS LIKE THE ONES BELOW!

From North End, Boston!

WEEK THREE: DAWN’S DO-A-NEW-THING-A-DAY MONTH!

•July 22, 2010 • Leave a Comment

I started this, so I have to finish it…but I should not have done it during a month with a bad back!

I could be doing things like; taking a circus training class, go kayaking on my own, hiking a mountain, learning more about horse back riding, volunteering at a petting zoo and so on…but no!  I am stuck with a whacked out back trying to come up with non-physical “new” things to do!

So…here are my new things for Week Three:

REMEMBER TO CLICK ON PHOTO TO SEE THE WHOLE ALBUM!

July 15th: Laid around with a “wrenched” whacked out back while our new apartment needed to be put into order.

We moved to another furnished small place yesterday.  Still not “home,” but closer to downtown Brattleboro and it has 2 rooms instead of bring just a studio!  I was on the road to recovery with my whacked out back, but think the standing around the 2 days at the film shoot and packing stuff weakened my back and I “wrenched” it putting me back to the pain I felt the first week I threw it out!  Argh.   Not to0 many people know this about me, but when I move to a new place I settle in the first night.  I hate living out of boxes and not feeling like it is my place.  So I had to fight that urge over and over again all day long.

July 16th: Went to Jefferson, NY.  I have never been to Jefferson, NY, and not only was that new, we stayed at a brothel-like hotel too!

From Nestler Family Reunion Weekend (Mom’s side) 2010

A family reunion on my Mom’s side of the family brought us to Jefferson, NY.  A small town with a Masonic Hall, a grass square and a restaurant/bar that also has 3 rooms for rent.  That is about it.  And yes, we stayed at the Heartbreak Hotel!  There is definitely more drinking and eating going on there than sleeping…and now we know why!  And that is all I will say about that!

July 17th: Met some family members for the very first time!

At the Nestler family reunion, I met several family members that I had never met before.  Going to a Nestler family reunion is not a new thing, but meeting new family members is a new thing for me!  I love it and found out that I have 208 cousins on this side of my family alone!

From Nestler Family Reunion Weekend (Mom’s side) 2010

July 18th: We went to Troy, NY.

From Trip Back to Vermont from the Catskills

Who knew Troy, NY was so cool looking and photogenic?  And if we had known we would have gotten there earlier for the HUGE Bar-B-Que Cook Off event they were having that day!  Due to its industrial / port town back ground I do not think many people have thought of it as a pretty town to visit, but they have turned the past into something really lovely.  The Central Troy Historic District is just amazing with old beautiful building after the next, not to mention the green riverside park and interesting bridge!

From Trip Back to Vermont from the Catskills
From Trip Back to Vermont from the Catskills

If you thought that all was exciting…the rest of the 3rd week gets even better! Uh…Just joking!

July 19th: Completely moved into new apartment…meaning I put everything away!

This is not a new thing for me, but I could not stand it any longer!  And happily I did not whack my back out again doing so!

From Our New Brat Apt!
From Our New Brat Apt!
From Our New Brat Apt!
From Our New Brat Apt!

July 20th:   Walked from our new apartment around downtown…we live in the middle of it all now…so it is exciting for us small town folk!

Went to the Post Office and the Co-Op…how much more non NEW could I get?  But I did NOT need a car to do any of it! Even throughout the years living in San Francisco without a car, I needed a bus to do those two things!

July 21st: We decided we are staying in Brattleboro, VT for a year. Now…that is a concept that is not only new, but it is something I just can’t get my mind around!

Jim’s work will more than likely last longer that a year, but we can not commit to living here more than that right now. Our plan of living in a big city with lots of stuff to do, public transportation and maybe a friend or family member or two around…was the plan! So much for plans!

NESTLER FAMILY REUNION

•July 20, 2010 • 1 Comment

FIRST OF ALL….REST IN PEACE AUNT GRACE MARIE!
She was the oldest and the longest living Nestler siblings.  She died Monday, July 19th, 2010 at the fine age of 96 years and 9 months. Although she could not attend the reunion, she was remembered and loved!

For those of you who don’t know…

…the Nestlers are from my Mom’s side of my family.  Well, actually, my Mom’s Mom’s side of the family.  This reunion was organized by my 2nd cousin, Mary Mohr and her husband, John, assisted by my Aunt, Mary Wigger.  It was held on the Mohr Family Camp/Cabin Retreat in Jefferson, NY (The Catskills) on the weekend of July 17th, 2010.

PLAN AHEAD…NEXT NESTLER FAMILY REUNION:  JULY 2013!

From Nestler Family Reunion Weekend (Mom’s side) 2010

I will fill this blog with tons of photos and links to photos….as well as things I learned and experienced during the weekend!

Remember to click on the photo for the entire photo album!

– I have 208 cousins (12 deceased).

– I have 21 Aunts and Uncles (16 deceased).

– 34 family members showed up for the reunion.

– I have family in 20 different states.

– I tried to figure out the 1st/2nd cousin once/twice removed thing and gave up!

– The farthest someone came to the reunion, I think was my Aunt Mary, who lives in San Diego.

From Nestler Family Reunion Weekend (Mom’s side) 2010

–  Aunt Anne was also the oldest at the reunion at the fine young age of  86 years, 1 month and 1 day!

–  There are 7 Mary’s in my family.

–  There are 3 Margarets and they all go or went by Peggy.

– Jim and I will be seeing Christine, Zoe and Peyton soon!

–  There are a lot of nicknames in my family…Harry for Henry, Peggy for Margaret, Sally for Sara, Teddy for Harriet, Sissy for Harriet, Gene for Augustus, Nellie for Ellen, Dick for Richard, Dee for Dolores, Nonie for Nora, and Reggie for Regina!

–  There is only one DAWN…I mean there is only one person with the name Dawn in my family!

From Nestler Family Reunion Weekend (Mom’s side) 2010

–  I learned that there is German blood in the Nestler family, not just Irish and English.

–  Beer can be drank for breakfast.

From Nestler Family Reunion Weekend (Mom’s side) 2010

–  Wood is slippery when wet (aha…most of you don’t know I slipped on the wet tree stump/step when we left….I am a sneaky faller).

– There is at least one musician in the family.

– My aunt at around 60 years of age got her first tattoo and is now working on her 3rd!

WEEK TWO – DO A NEW THING A DAY MONTH!

•July 10, 2010 • Leave a Comment

WEEK TWO!!!

This list of NEW things will be shorter than the last…to the point with a quick description!

REMEMBER TO CLICK ON THE PHOTOS FOR THE FULL ALBUM!

This is a big week…will be doing something I really have never ever done in my life and I am very uncomfortable even thinking about it!  For those inpatient people see July 12th!

Read on or Stay Tuned!

JULY 8TH: Had a visit from a SF friend!

Not uncomfortable at all!  Rina was our first guest from not only San Francisco, but all of California to boot!  Wait…from all of the west coast even!  She was in the Boston area and made the 2 hour country road drive over to Brattleboro for the night.   It was way-oh-so exciting for me to have a girlfriend to hang with in-person for 24 hours or so!

Since I had a guest to our little town, no, I did not do anything really new.  Deal with it!

JULY 9TH : Went to an Antiquarian Book and Button Store.

Who knew they even existed? Although, the only really uncomfortable thing about it was the immense amount of dust, it is hard to get myself in stores like that!!  First, if you love the books so much…dust once in awhile AND put the beloved old things  into some kind of understandable order, Mr. Funky Antiquarian Book Guy!!    I did buy two buttons to hopefully make rings out of them…which made the Antiquarian button guy cringe!  And I so wanted to wash my hands afterwards…the buttons were so dusty they left dirt on my hands.  Okay…so you are seeing the “someone else’s dirt” phobia side of me!

JULY 10TH: I stayed in!

For those of  you who really know me, know that it is unusual for me to turn down going out to do just about anything! The social butterfly within just does not let it happen, but I did stay in for the night (a Saturday night mind you) while Jim and our friend, Matt (met in Honduras but lives in CT), went out for dinner and to see a couple of bands!  It is not easy being the “good” wife.  Go ahead, laugh!

JULY 11TH: Jim is hiking Wantastiquet Mountain today…and it IS VERY uncomfortable that I can not go because of my back.

This whole back out of whack thing is getting on my nerves!!!  Doc said no exercise except some stretches and some walking, but know if I do it more than 20 minutes my back will start hurting not to speak of what hiking up hill for an hour would do!   Okay, I am going to still try to do something really new instead of just using this as my lame “kind of” new thing for the day!

From Jim & Matt’s Mountain Hike

Wantastiquet Mountain is only 1390 feet above sea level, so am I really missing anything?

JULY 12TH: I broke a leg…in the acting sense!  I played a hair dresser in a short film today!!

“Tick Tock Time Emporium” is a short low budget film and I am IN IT! Well, that is if I get pass the editing room floor! Morgan Faust is an up and coming person in the film industry and I am very happy to be in one of her earlier projects!  I was taking notes from the young, yet very experienced, lead character, Max and her film Mom!

From Dawn’s Film Acting Debut!

JULY 13TH:  I will be the official “Still Shot Photographer” on the “Tick Tock Time Emporium” today!

From Day 2 of Shooting!

Now that is something new for me these days!  I have not had my photography acknowledged or published since college! Unless asked otherwise, my film industry days are now over. A whole lot of standing around waiting does not make a healing whacked-out back happy…but me and my back enjoyed our time in cute little Bellow Falls, Vermont!

JULY 14TH:  Uh….how will I top the last two days???  Come back soon to find out!

Well, today I came up with a design for something I have been thinking about for, oh, let’s just say, forever!  I never could decide on one design and this morning I came up with something perfect!  I am sorry I can not tell you what it is, because it will ruin another new thing I have planned for later in the month.  But, you will see it when the whole new “never-been-done-but-been-thinking-about-it-forever”  thing is completed!  Wait, I lie, you can see it somewhere on the HenderBalz Blog before then!  Can you guess what it is?
